ODSAL SEDBERGH 24 BOOTHTOWN TERRIERS 18

The Terriers fell to a disappointing first away defeat of the season on Saturday at Odsal. It is always a difficult place to go and one of the worst pitches in the division, but no excuses; the Terriers were just not good enough on the day. The home side, playing down the hill, dominated the first half, but after throwing everything bar the kitchen sink at the Terriers defence, which showed good resilience to keep them at bay, they had only a penalty goal on ten minutes to show for their efforts as they led 2-0. After weathering this early storm the Terriers finally got some good field position of their own and scored with virtually the first chance they had on 22 mins. A lovely ball from Graham Charlesworth put the impresssive Graham Rowlinson into a gap 10 yards out and the centre showed good upper body strength to score out wide, Ben Walsh converting for 6-2. The home side replied 8 minutes later to level the score with a try out wide and the Terriers response was immediate; a kick was charged down and somehow landed in the hands of Charlesworth out on the fringes and he raced up the touchline for the try converted by Walsh. Again Odsal came back, levelling the scores just before half time at 12-12 and setting up an interesting 2nd half. The visitors got the dream start when a speculative chip through from Charlesworth fell at the feet of Ben Walsh, who hacked forward and Charlesworth pounced for the try, Walsh converting for 18-12. The Terriers were seemingly in control and had a number of chances which they did not take, but the home side bounced back on 60 minutes to level the scores again at 18-18 and were now in the ascendancy as they pounded the Terriers line. The pressure told when they scored again with 9 minutes to go to lead 24-18. The last 8 minutes was frantic; the home side missed with an attempted drop goal whilst the Terriers had a number of opportunities to save the game but could not make the breakthrough as the home side held on for the victory. So a disappointing result for the Terriers but they stay in second place and will look to bounce back against Sharlston in a fortnight. Some positives in the shape of 16 year olds Adam Cooper and George Kinnaird, who both had strong games, whilst Graham Rowlinson scooped the Man of the Match award with a good all round display.
