The Terriers comfortably progressed through to the second round of the Andy Bennett Memorial Trophy on Saturday on the back of a superb opening 50 minutes after which they led 40-0. You wouldn’t have guessed what was about to happen as the early exchanges saw both sides defensively strong, but the introduction of powerhouse second rower Alex Woodcock provided the breakthrough, impressive scrum half Liam Walsh putting him into a hole 10 yards out as he went in for his first try for the club. The same player then scored an almost identical try, this time Gary Lee providing the final pass and Ben Walsh converting for 10-0. The home side were now in rampant mood and in-form prop Scott Lindsay produced a powerful burst before a superb offload around the opposition player to centre Ben Walsh’ who raced 45 metres stepping the fullback with ease before converting. The Terriers went on to score 2 more converted tries before the break as they totally dominated; first a lovely offload from Liam Walsh found Graham Charlesworth who was never going to be caught as he raced in from just inside his own half, then Craig Knowles finished after a neat ball from Dale Brown. 28-0 half time. The Terriers effectively finished the game as a contest in the first ten minutes of the second half with two early tries, both to scrum half Walsh, the first a 40 yard dash after breaking through a tired defence and choosing to dummy the full back with Woodcock in support hunting his hat trick, then a much simpler effort stepping through from close range to make it 40-0. The home side then took their foot off the gas and the visitors had a decent 15 minute spell, scoring 3 tries, one converted, to narrow the gap to 40-14. This woke the Terriers up and they finished strongly with 2 tries in the final ten minutes. First a neat kick into the in goal by Walsh was touched down by Brown, then young winger Adam Cooper scored his second of the season with a close range score, Brown the provider. Liam Walsh took home the Man of the Match award with a superb attacking display creating 3 and scoring 2, well backed up by Brown, Lindsay and Woodcock.
